HOW TO PACK FOR YOUR FIRST SKI TRIP

Before you hit the slopes, you’ll need to gear up properly. Packing for your first ski or snowboard trip can feel overwhelming, but with a bit of planning, you’ll have everything you need to stay warm, comfortable, and safe. From clothing layers and protective gear to accessories that make your day easier, having the right items ensures you can focus on learning, enjoying the snow, and maximizing your mountain adventure.

Use this no-stress packing checklist to make sure you’re fully prepared:

Pro tip: If you are bringing your own equipment, pack everything in a duffel or rolling ski bag, and keep smaller essentials (gloves, googles, neck warmer) in a separate pouch so they’re easy to grab on the go.

WHERE TO RENT YOUR SKI GEAR

You can also rent all your ski and snowboard equipment right at our Ski Rental Shop, conveniently located inside the Main Lodge. Our team will help you find the perfect fit for skis, boots, and poles, ensuring comfort and safety on the slopes.

If it’s your first time, don’t worry — our team will walk you through the process, adjust your gear for a perfect fit, and answer any questions you might have before you head out. We recommend arriving a little early, especially on weekends or holidays, to allow time for fitting and setup so you can make the most of your day on the mountain.

HOW TO PROPERLY GET ON A CHAIR LIFT

For first-time skiers, chair lifts can feel a little intimidating. With other skiers around and chairs moving quickly, knowing the right steps can make the experience smooth and stress-free. Here’s a simple guide to help you ride with confidence:

  1. Wait in Line
Be patient and wait for your turn behind other skiers. Keep your RFID card visible for the chair attendant so they can easily scan it.
  2. Move to the Loading Zone
When it’s your turn, use your poles to push yourself forward into the loading area. Stay balanced and ready for the approaching chair.
  3. Hold Your Poles Together
Hold both poles in one hand so they stay out of the way while you sit. This prevents them from getting caught or causing you to lose balance.
  4. Look Back
Keep an eye on the approaching chair by glancing over your shoulder. Being aware of its speed and position helps you time your sit-down properly.
  5. Sit Down Gently
As the chair touches the backs of your knees, gently lower yourself into the seat. Avoid leaning back too early or grabbing the chair — let it support you naturally.
  6. Lower the Safety Bar
  7. Enjoy the Ride

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride up the mountain! Look around, plan your route down, and get ready for your next run.

WHAT DO THE COLOR CODES MEAN ON THE SLOPES?

If you’ve ever looked down a mountain and wondered what all the colors on the trail map mean, here’s your cheat sheet:

WHERE CAN I TAKE A BREAK?

The Main Lodge
At the heart of the resort, the Main Ski Lodge is the perfect spot to refuel between runs. Grab-and-go favorites like soups, chili, salads, and pizza make it easy to recharge before heading back out. Enjoy a quick bite or linger over lunch while watching the action on the slopes.

The Sugar Shack
Located on the west side of the mountain, the Sugar Shack is a lively, slope-side hangout offering wood-fired pizzas, hearty sandwiches, and shareable starters in a cozy, fire-lit setting. Upstairs, the Sports Bar serves local craft beers and a great game-day atmosphere — the perfect place to unwind with friends.

The Retreat

On the east side near the Snow Tubing Arena and terrain parks, The Retreat offers ski-in/ski-out access and a hearty menu of burgers, wings, and comfort food classics. With its inviting fireplace and relaxed vibe, it’s a favorite spot to rest and recharge without leaving the mountain.

WHERE TO FIND FIRST AID

Peek’n Peak Resort makes guest safety a top priority, with a dedicated team of professional Ski Patrol members and clearly marked First Aid stations located throughout the slopes. The main First Aid center is housed in the resort’s Main Ski Lodge, easily accessible from all trails, with additional patrol presence near The Retreat and tubing area on the eastern side of the mountain. Ski Patrol members—recognizable by their red jackets with white crosses—are always on duty, patrolling the runs and ready to respond quickly to any situation. They’re equipped to handle everything from minor scrapes to more serious injuries, using rescue sleds and radios to coordinate fast assistance. Whether you’re carving down the terrain parks or cruising the beginner slopes, you can ski or snowboard with confidence knowing professional help is never far away at Peek’n Peak.
